Coverground USA is looking for freelance writers and aspiring journalists who want to break into adventure, climbing, and outdoor sports journalism. If you're a beginner writer looking to get published and build your portfolio, this is your shot.
We pay $100 per accepted article for compelling, well-researched stories that fit our style. We’re all about high-impact adventure writing, original reporting, and stories that make people think, feel, or see the outdoor world in a new way.
This whole thing runs on passion. Coverground USA is a self-funded operation, funded entirely by sticker sales and donations—every dollar goes straight to paying writers and keeping this project alive. No corporate backing, no big media budgets—just a love for adventure and good writing.

Who Should Pitch?
We’re looking for aspiring journalists and writers who are eager to get their first byline or build credibility in the industry. If you have a passion for adventure and outdoor sports, we want strong reporting on climbing, expeditions, and outdoor culture—but we’re not just limited to climbing. We’re also interested in stories from anyone involved in outdoor sports and hobbies, whether it’s ultrarunning, mountaineering, backcountry skiing, bikepacking, paddling, or anything that pushes limits and explores the wild. If you have a unique angle, whether that’s investigative pieces, trend analysis, or deep dives into compelling outdoor topics, we’d love to hear your pitch.
What We’re Looking For:
We’re looking for adventure sports journalism, featuring well-researched stories on outdoor exploration, extreme sports, and adventure travel. While climbing stories are encouraged, we also welcome articles on mountaineering, ultrarunning, backcountry skiing, paddling, and other adrenaline-fueled pursuits. We value high-impact storytelling that educates, challenges, or inspires, bringing fresh perspectives to the outdoor community. Additionally, we’re interested in outdoor culture and news, covering topics like wilderness conservation, the evolution of adventure sports, and the impact of outdoor recreation on society.
What We’re NOT Looking For:
We’re not looking for first-person travel diaries or personal blog reflections unless they offer a larger takeaway. Standard destination guides, like “Best Climbing Spots in California,” aren’t a fit for us either. We also avoid generic listicles, as we prefer well-researched narratives with depth and originality.
Rates & Payment
$100 per accepted article (paid via Venmo, cash app)
Word Count: 1,000 – 2,500 words.
Articles must be original and unpublished elsewhere.
