Planning

How far out should we plan for things before it becomes so nuanced that it’s more unproductive than productive? I’ve planned many events in my life, mostly involving moving from one place to another and making small changes within my life. I’ll be the first to admit that I have no answer to the question, “Where do you see yourself in 5 years?” How can I? How can anyone, really? I suppose you can plan where you want to be and work towards that goal, trying to reach it as closely as you can. But does anything ever go according to plan? Whether it’s losing a job, experiencing a broken heart, suffering an injury or illness, or some traumatic experience, something is bound to change. It’s how you respond to change and adapt your plans accordingly that truly defines the course of your life.

Interestingly enough, I planned the last six months, and it went pretty accordingly. Some things changed, and some really stayed on course. I told myself I was going to move back to San Diego, live in Encinitas, get a temporary job that I enjoy, save some paychecks, and most importantly, heal my shoulder. I did just that, and along the way, some things didn’t go as planned. I felt I adapted well and did the best I could to keep going and keep my plan as close as possible to what I had envisioned for myself.

I believe that maintaining motivation is crucial, and it’s equally important to have driving forces in your life beyond just your occupation.
